Tackling localised grooming of young, vulnerable girls brings together expert practitioners who work to tackle the problem of localised (also known as ‘on-street’) grooming. In 2011 CEOP conducted a national thematic assessment which highlighted the extent of localised grooming, and made a number of recommendations.
The key message was that all areas should assume that localised grooming was taking place unless there was clear evidence to the contrary. CEOP also highlighted the critical importance of early intervention and of following up risk indicators.
Speakers at the seminar include:
• Sheila Taylor, Director of the National Working Group for Sexually Exploited Children and Young People
• Detective Chief Inspector Alan Edwards, West Mercia Police, who has studied approaches to localised grooming in the Netherlands as well as the UK
• Alyas Karmani and Shakeel Aziz from STREET UK, who deliver training to young men from British Pakistani communities on attitudes and behaviour towards women
• Teresa Rose, Walsall Street Teams, which run an early intervention initiative for at risk young women
• Nick McPartlan, who manages Barnardo’s specialist sexual exploitation project, Engage; and Lindsay Dalton, a Parent Worker from CROP
• Ann Lucas, who manages Sheffield Local Safeguarding Children Board’s multi agency Sexual Exploitation Service
